Is Micronesia a country or a region?
The name can refer to a Pacific region or, in a national context, the Federated States of Micronesia. The region is larger than that country: it also includes Palau, the Marshall Islands, Kiribati and the Mariana Islands. A search for “Micronesian people” should therefore identify the islands or communities concerned.
A specific example: Carolinian wayfinding
UNESCO documents Carolinian wayfinding and canoe making, particularly in the outer islands of Yap State. Knowledge is passed on through apprenticeships with master navigators and carvers. This account describes a situated tradition, not every Micronesian culture.
