What does Pasifika mean?
In New Zealand, Pasifika and Pasefika are collective terms used for people from Pacific countries and their descendants who identify with Pacific heritage. The Ministry for Pacific Peoples explains this usage in Kapasa. The term brings together diverse identities; it does not name one people or one language.
Do Pasifika and Polynesian mean the same thing?
The terms are not synonyms. Kapasa includes peoples of Polynesia, Melanesia and Micronesia in its account of Pacific peoples. When describing a person, use their chosen identity. When presenting a practice or language, name the community and place instead of attributing it indiscriminately to all Pasifika people.
Pacific communities in New Zealand
The 2023 New Zealand Census counted 442,632 people identifying with the Pacific peoples ethnic group. Of these, 62.1% lived in the Auckland region. These are 2023 census figures, not a current population estimate for the entire Pacific. A diaspora statistic does not by itself describe the cultures of the islands of origin.
