Pounamu: material, provenance and meaning

A green stone photograph cannot tell you where an object came from or what it means to its owners. Begin with provenance.

The documented starting point

Te Ara explains that pounamu includes named varieties and is not a single colour or decorative style. Its discussion distinguishes nephrite from bowenite, associated with tangiwai. Geological identification and the history of a particular taonga are related but different kinds of information.

Names do not map to one colour

Keane identifies inanga, kahurangi and kawakawa among nephrite varieties and distinguishes tangiwai as bowenite. This vocabulary connects material description with named categories; a photograph’s green colour is not enough to choose the correct identification.

A closer reading

When reading a catalogue or seller’s description, separate material, place of origin, maker and documented history. Notice which fields are supported and which are marketing language. Do not use a shape chart to assign a fixed spiritual meaning to every pendant. For an educational comparison, show how a mineral description differs from an object biography: one concerns physical properties, the other concerns people and relationships. Where a maker explains their own work publicly, cite that account rather than substituting a generic symbolism list.

Four fields before a claim of meaning

For an object description, record material, maker, origin and the history actually supplied. If only the first is known, do not fill the other three from a generic shape chart. A pendant’s outline is not a complete biography. When a maker provides an interpretation, attribute it to that work and person. This lets a reader appreciate the object without being told that every similar shape must carry the same meaning for every owner.
